Adolescents‘ Initiative

Life Skills Training in Mathare - Kenya

We are pleased that our partner in Kenya, the Mathare Community Center Library, will be able to carry out a six-month project "Adolescents' Initiative - Life Skills Training in Mathare - Kenya" on May 1st, 2024, which will help 10-19 year-old students from schools in Mathare to acquire important knowledge. As part of this project, 150 young people in the Mathare slums in Nairobi, Kenya, will be trained in their life skills.

Bildung fördert Entwicklung e.V. has supported both the library and the educational and cultural center financially and materially from the very beginning. John Wesonga Mang'eni - a student formerly supported by Bildung fördert Entwicklung e.V.  - is the project manager on site and has set up the community center and the library with the computer lab on a part-time basis, see details of the project here.

The Mathare slum is the second largest slum in Kenya after Kibera. It is characterized by an overcrowded/poor housing infrastructure, Teenage pregnancy, drugs and substance abuse, violent crime, radicalization of youth joining terrorist organizations, HIV/AIDS, human trafficking and high school dropout rates.

Life skills programs are a critical part of youth education. There is ample evidence that youth life skills programs contribute to the following outcomes: psychosocial, health, economic and learning outcomes, reduced exposure to gender-based violence, personal well-being, increased social, political and economic integration, postponement of marriage and increased empowerment in family planning.

The problems are not being solved by the government, non-governmental organizations such as the Mathare Community Center are leading the effort to improve the lives of the people of Mathare.

The specific objectives of the project:

  • Teaching life skills Stress management, Emotional regulation, Positive thinking, Self-esteem Empathy, Listening skills, Interpersonal effectiveness, Conflict management, Relationship management;

  • Training in basic photography and computer skills;

  • Peer-to-peer mentoring clubs in four schools in the Mathare slums;

  • Connecting the participating youth with volunteer mentors from the corporate/public sector

With the funds raised by Bildung fördert Entwicklung e.V., our association can support the Mathare Community Center Library (MCCL) in reaching a large number of young people and improving their educational opportunities through qualified, low-threshold offers. The project is funded by ELAN, the Rhineland-Palatinate state development policy network, with funds from Lotto Rhineland-Palatinate.
